[googlefont="Playfair Display"][googlefont="Josefin Sans"] To love to kiss, to sweetly hold for the dancing and the dreaming [attr="class","itokaytext"]There were dirty parts to every person, no one human was anymore perfect or pristine than the other, everyone has their demons. The difference between them and the man with his face down on his desk was that they were free to air their dirty parts, they didn't have an entire village watching their every move, they didn't have people waiting in the wings to swoop in and claw him away from a title he didn't even ask for, not yet, and even after so much time had passed, it still felt like too much too soon, or maybe that was just the emptiness left behind from losing a man he was only barely beginning to understand, a man who was just starting to understand him. Other people could afford to drink themselves into a stupor without judgement from people who looked up to them. But he couldn't do that, so he hit this dirty part of himself away, or tried to, but even the most talented thief inevitably slips up.
Sometimes it hit him in waves, and usually he was good at making himself disappear, slip away so he could shout at the trees, the sky, the lake, where he could kick and punch and cry and no one would see that side of him, it was easier that way, it was easier to pretend for everyone, so that they could keep thinking their chief had it all put together, it was easier than facing the reality of all his fragmented pieces.
But he'd gotten sloppy tonight, he'd gotten careless, and now he was far beyond gone, but not enough that he didn't realize he was alarmingly drunk in his bedroom, where anyone could find him and see those parts that he didn't want anyone to see. It wasn't late enough for his mother to be asleep, for anyone to be asleep, and there were far too many people that could find him.
His mind, or what was presently left on it, was zeroed in on the need to escape, to slip away and disappear the way he did with increasing frequency. The thing about drinking to forget though, is that you forget little things too, like the fact that you can't walk straight as you stumble and knock things over, making an awful amount of noise. You forget that your room is on the second story of your hut, until it's too late and you're on the ground staring at the stars and wondering why they're all moving. He didn't remember coming outside, he didn't remember having this much trouble getting air, like it had been knocked clean out of him, and he didn't remember the swirling sick in his stomach...But at least it didn't hurt.

Valka was in her room with Cloudjumper, nuzzling the dragon as she sat on her bed, him on the floor sitting up straight. She was going through things like her son, though unlike Hiccup hers were less in number, and most people already knew what was wrong. Stoick was gone, and she was back with her son. There was something missing though. All that time spent living in the dragons nest, that place was her home. Now she was the mother of the chief and living a normal life, normal for a woman who owned a dragon anyway. She brushed his fingers over the helmet she had worn into battle for the dragons, sighing deeply. Her dragon gave a worried croon, grabbing the helmet from her and setting it aside, nuzzling his beloved rider. "I know I know... You're feeling a little homesick too aren't you?" The Storm-Cutter simply smiled. Of course he wasn't homesick, he had his master here with him.
Bumbling around from Hiccup's room made the woman stand quickly, grabbing her staff and holding it at the ready. Berk was most likely a safe place for Hiccup, but with so many people after her son... It was great stress on a parent. "Hiccup?" She asked worriedly and opened the door, just as the nightfury scrambled through the window to, she assumed, get to his rider. She bolted to the window, looking around... and then down. "Hiccup!" She started to climb out the window, Cloudjumper grabbed her staff and helped lower her. She landed beside her son, kneeling and gently lifting his torseo. The smell of alcohol was one a viking knew well, Valka was surprised to be smelling such a thing on her son. She checked his head for any blood before worrying about broken bones, sighing in relief at the fact her baby boy was in one piece.
"Slow breaths." She said softly, laying his head in her lap as she combed her fingers gently through his hair, "You're fine." Her son was anything but fine, she knew that well, but soothing words was how she used to calm him when he was just a baby in her arms, and now was a time as any to be gentle.

[googlefont="Playfair Display"][googlefont="Josefin Sans"] To love to kiss, to sweetly hold for the dancing and the dreaming [attr="class","itokaytext"]Toothless was out the window the moment his rider went tumbling, cursing himself for not being quick enough to grab him before he hit the ground, this was becoming more frequent, Hiccup had always been wild, more dangerous to himself than anyone else, but not like this, not in this way. The Night Fury was trying his best to keep his self destructive rider from inevitably destroying himself, he let out frantic noises at him, feeling his heart lurch for half a second when he saw his rider laying so still like that, it was a sight he'd seen too many times for comfort. But after a moment he noticed the breathing, and the prickling at his scales stopped as he nuzzled at the man's cheek, crooning worriedly until he heard noise at the window, glancing up to see Hiccup's mother, he stepped back and paced worriedly, with maybe just a little agitation that this had happened in the first place.
The fall had done a good job of forcing Hiccup into something closer to sober, but his eyes were still unfocused as he tried to figure out where he was, it was disorienting, staring up into the stars and watching them swim in front of his eyes, his struggled breaths and coughing died down into a more even pace as he tried to take the advice from the voice that was talking to him, it was hard, and he was only half aware of what she was saying, his words slurred and stumbling when he finally spoke, "I can't...Can't fly away like that...I tried...M'sorry..." He stared up for a little while longer before tears bit at his eyes and he closed them, reaching vaguely for something before his hands found their way on his mom's cheeks, and he looked at her as if just realizing that she was there, "I think there's a nest of hornets in my head...I think they want to kill me..." His voice was bitter behind the slurred incoherent tone, "I think everyone wants to kill me..." His breath hitched and he put a hand over his face, which screwed up in pain as he tried to fight off his own feelings, "I'm trying...I'm trying..." His mumbled words trailed off into incoherent babbling after a moment.

Valka leaned her face against the boy's hand as it touched her cheek, looking him over worriedly as he spoke, wiping the tears starting to form in her own eyes, lifting her son carefully to hug him close again her, "It's just us Hiccup. There's no one who can hurt you here." She massages her hands up ad down the boys back in a soothing gesture, Cloudjumper landed beside toothless and gave the ebony dragon a worried look. Toothless and him were friends, and their riders were family to them and one another. If anything happened to Hiccup then all three of them would be distraught, but by the looks of it something was happening to his rider's cub. "She said nothing's broken... but there's something wrong. Why'd he fall out the window?" He asked Toothless worriedly, tilting his head at the other.
Valka rocked back and forth slightly, trying to keep herself composed, "Let's go inside, okay?" template by Sammy @ Adox 2.0

[googlefont="Playfair Display"][googlefont="Josefin Sans"] To love to kiss, to sweetly hold for the dancing and the dreaming [attr="class","itokaytext"]Toothless didn't break his eyes from Hiccup's face as he listened to his rider speak, no longer pacing anymore, he was just staring with a pensive expression. He was trying, he was trying so hard to protect his friend, but the longer this went on the more at a loss he felt, it was like watching a snake eat its own tail, knowing full well that it would die, but being unable to help being consumed by that need. Dragons knew little of human maladies, he knew Hiccup was drinking in excess, and often, but that was all, he knew that he was deeply trouble, far beyond anything he told anyone else, things that were only shared between the two of them.
He glanced up when Cloudjumper landed beside him, letting out a harsh sigh through his nose as he shook his head, "no, he isn't okay, he hasn't been okay for a long time." He growled softly, his tail flicking half with annoyance at himself, and half with anger at his human's foolish action, "He jumped. He didn't want his mother to see him like this, he was trying to escape into the forest like he's been doing for months." He dug his claws into the dirt, getting to his feet and turning a little away, "I couldn't catch him, I don't know what to do for him anymore..." He felt like a failure, whatever was ailing his friend was deeply human, something he couldn't even begin to understand.
When he was pulled close, Hiccup's eyes watered up more, and his voice shook as he mumbled out, "they'll find me, they always find me..." He closed his eyes, letting his head fall against her shoulder as he put his arms around her, "I just want things to be quiet..." His words trailed off when she rocked him, and he felt the painful lump in his throat worsen, he nodded when she suggested they go inside, the last thing he wanted was any curious villagers to see this mess.

Cloudjumper moved closer, doing as he did to comfort his rider whenever she was frustrated or upset, gently draping a wing over the smaller dragon, as if hugging him. "I can smell the stress on him all the time... Humans are odd, maybe it's doing something to his head, being worried all the time?" He looked down at Toothless and gave him a small forced smile, "You're doing as much as any dragon can, being here for him."
Valka struggled for a moment, she was a strong woman but her son was heavy. She stood with her son in her arms in a bridal carry, hugging him against her closely as she went inside, "I'll make you some tea and in the morning we can talk, okay?" She spoke behind a shielded voice, not bothering to see if the dragons were following.

[googlefont="Playfair Display"][googlefont="Josefin Sans"] To love to kiss, to sweetly hold for the dancing and the dreaming [attr="class","itokaytext"]He knew his companion was right, and he'd noticed it too for a long time, the more the days pulled past them the more Hiccup seemed to fall apart, but it felt like he was the only one who noticed this, because the chief was determined not to show that he was falling apart, "I've noticed it to, worse and worse every day, it's going to kill him..." The thought was harrowing, but he wasn't able to dwell on it long when he felt the other dragon's wing drape over him, he sighed through his nose again and scooted a little bit closer, allowing himself to be comforted by another, "I only hope it's enough..." He glanced up when Valka lifted Hiccup, getting to his feet and following after her, looking back to make sure the other dragons was close behind.
He looked surprised when he was lifted, mumbling something about being able to walk himself before conceding defeat and letting his head rest limp against her shoulder. He could already feel the slightest tugging of sleep like a salve on his far beyond frazzled nerves, but he kept his eyes open and nodded vaguely at her words, letting her take him back inside, "m'sorry...S'my fault..."

Cloudjumper was quick to follow behind Toothless, grabbing his rider's cane as he did so, "I'm sure Valka will know what to do. Now that she's noticed what he's doing to himself she won't let it go so easy."
"Nothing is your fault, love. Just close your eyes and rest." She hummed softly as she took the boy to his bedroom, laying him down gently in the bed, nodding for the nightfury to stay by the bed along with her own dragon before she went back downstairs quickly to retrieve a pot she had brewing earlier thinking she would need it to get to sleep. She made a cup for her son and went back upstairs with it, sitting on the bed with him and cupping his cheek, seeing if he was still awake to even drink the tea.

[googlefont="Playfair Display"][googlefont="Josefin Sans"] To love to kiss, to sweetly hold for the dancing and the dreaming [attr="class","itokaytext"]The Night Fury only nodded as he followed, he hoped he was right, he hoped Hiccup's mother could put a stop to this, or at least soothe whatever was making his rider's mind so sick. He let out a soft rumble when Valka nodded for him to stay by Hiccup's bed, not even hesitating to make himself comfortable as close by his rider as he could, his head found it's way under his arm and he felt everything relax a little when the biy's hand went to gently running over his head, like the act was second nature by now.
He still felt like the entire world was spinning as he was laid back in bed, but he didn't make anymore attempts to get up and escape, he couldn't have anyway with both dragons keeping a watchful eye, and his body was too weighed down and fatigued now anyway, so he just laid back with a oft mumble when Valka left the room. He was still awake when she returned, but just barely, his eyes had become half lidded and heavy as he looked over at her, tears bubbling up again when he felt her hand on his cheek, he lifted his own to rest over it, pressing his face into it as he finally relaxed against the bed, feeling sleep tugging at him much harder now than it had been before.

Valka kissed Hiccup's forehead as his breathing slowed, and now that she was sure her son was asleep she sat on the foot of his bed, shoulders shaking as she finally let her tears fall, trying to be as silent as possible with her shaking hands and shoulders. She reached a hand out to her dragon, who was already hugging a wing around her. The dragon made worried croons as his companion continued to sit there and weap. "He's all I have left to loose." She said to Cloudjumper softly, wiping her eyes, "Him and you."
He stole a glance at Toothless and wrapped another wing protectively around his rider, "I don't think you should let him drink the smelly stuff anymore. That's all I can say for sure." He said and nuzzled Valka before she pulled away and wrapped her arms around her son gently, holding him close and resting her head on his chest so that her ear was pressed against his heart.

[googlefont="Playfair Display"][googlefont="Josefin Sans"] To love to kiss, to sweetly hold for the dancing and the dreaming [attr="class","itokaytext"]The Night Fury's attention was pulled from the steady rise and fall of his rider's chest when he heard the soft sounds of crying from his mother, his head perking up, gently so he didn't disturb the sleeping chief, though he was sure in this state he wouldn't wake up for anything. He wished he could put a wing over Hiccup and make all this stress and pain go away, but it only seemed to spiral more out of control, and for the first time he felt genuinely helpless against this situation, it didn't mean he couldn't try, he would always try, he owed it to Hiccup to try.
His attention was caught by Cloudjumper's words, and he turned his eyes away with a somewhat ashamed expression, 'I'll try...It's a helpless feeling...I can't tell him to stop what he's doing, I can only try and distract him from feeling like he has to...' He rested his head back down beside his rider, glancing over with his eyes when Valka came closer, 'I'll do my best though, you can bet on that.' His growl was determined not to let his friend fall again, in any way.

CloudJumper walked over to Toothless next and gently pressed his head against the other dragon's side. "If you ever need help you can come to me." He offered lightly, though the most he could do was give up some time to watch over Hiccup as well as the other dragon, as least he could offer encouraging words as well. "Im sure she'll talk to him more in he morning."
In the morning Valka awoke first, sighing softly as she ran a hand through her hair, slowly sitting up as not to wake her son yet. She'd wait till he was fully awake and could hear her before she rained hell down upon him. She reached over the bed and per her dragon's head before noticing the nightfury on her son's side of the bed. She leaned over him to pet the dragon's head gently, "You're doing what you can... if only you could tell me what you know."

[googlefont="Playfair Display"][googlefont="Josefin Sans"] To love to kiss, to sweetly hold for the dancing and the dreaming [attr="class","itokaytext"]The morning after was always worse than the night before, and he usually tried his damnedest to stay in bed until the groggy sick decided to leave him alone, Toothless had gotten used to sleeping in on nights like this, keeping a careful watch on his rider so that he could do something...Anything...Should the man need him to. He felt a hand on his head when Valka woke, blinking open sleepy green eyes to croon softly in response, if only, he knew his rider's sorrows and pains like the back of his tail, he felt some of what the chief felt, and knew intimately the things that darkened his mind when he was driven to this point. If he could speak he would.
Hiccup finally stirred when the morning sun filtered too bright through the window, he was acutely aware of how much absolutely everything hurt, his head was pounding more than anything though, and his movements were stiff as he sat up, taking a moment before he noticed everyone in his room, "Uh..." He glanced between his mother and Cloudjumper, face the picture of confusion, "good morning?"

Valka huffed as her son gave a confused orning greeting. "You don't even remember what you did last night did you?" She asked and grabbed a pillow, hitting Hiccup in the stomach with it, though she was using a pillow she was still very serious. She just didn't want to hurt her son anymore than he already might be.
"You almost kill yourself and all you can say is 'Good morning'?!" She threw the pillow at him, standing up, CloudJumper moved back quickly, not wanting to get in the way of the angry woman. "You were drunk Hiccup, and who's to say that was the first time?"
The dragon quickly went to Toothless' side, feeling the urge to leave the room and allow the two humans to figure things out on their own.

[googlefont="Playfair Display"][googlefont="Josefin Sans"] To love to kiss, to sweetly hold for the dancing and the dreaming [attr="class","itokaytext"]His eyes widened in sudden alarm when she grabbed the pillow and whacked him with it, he wanted to laugh at the gesture, but he could tell her face was deadly serious, and his own was as well as he tried to remember the night before, "wh-last night? Did something happen?" He reached a hand up and ran it through his hair, rubbing at his aching head, he had to wonder if it might have something to do with why his entire body ached, it took him a moment to actually process the night before, and when he did the realization dawned on him and he turned his eyes away, suddenly looking utterly ashamed, "I...Uh..." He fumbled, unable to really find a decent excuse for his actions, there wasn't one was there? He glanced at Toothless, who turned his eyes away with a helpless rumble, moving away to join Cloudjumper away from the epicenter of the earthquake.
He caught the pillow with a guilty expression, her words brought most of the night back, in bits and pieces, he remembered trying to leave to avoid this very confrontation, "you...I was trying to slip out so you wouldn't find out..." He rubbed at the back of his neck, unable to keep his fidgety hands still, "It's..." He sighed, figuring he might as well be honest seeing as he was already in the hot seat, "it's not the first time...Just...Usually I'm nowhere near the village, I got good at hiding, but..." He rubbed a hand over his face, his eyes suddenly too tired for someone as young as he was, "it feels like the entire weight of the world was thrown onto my back in the span of a few months...But I have to grin and bear it...Because that's what a chief does..." He moved to the edge of his bed, getting to his feet with only a little bit of a sore wobble, "they need me to be strong, but I don't feel it..."
