The showdown with Drago on the shores of Valka's Sanctuary had ended up displacing many of the dragons that called the mountain home, they all felt the death of the behemoth dragon who had protected them all for so long, and many of the dragons had found their way to new islands, places close to Berk, for those that hadn't found a place to roost on the island itself. Gruff was not helpless by any means, his senses were heightened far beyond what a normal dragon, even of his own species, would probably be, and when he was in the company of other dragons he could make his way anywhere by sound and smell alone...But all the dragons on the mountain had gone, and in the confusion of the evacuation, the sightless young dragon had gotten left behind.
He could fly, and perhaps he could follow scent to lead him there, but smells only laster so long, and his trail to Berk had run cold on this island that smelled of so many dragons and people...But none of them were familiar...Nothing struck him as family. His flight had unknowingly taken him just shy of Berk, a much longer flight than the young dragon was used to had more than taken a toll on him, and by the time he stumbled into the human markets, he was exhausted and starving, and this place carried the distinct smell of food...
...Unfortunately, the locals were not prepared to take kindly to what they took for a like a wild dragon snuffling around, and after a short chase, the young dragon was cornered, letting out frightened sounds as he felt the presence of the large men imposing in, he was too tired to fight, and he didn't want to hurt them anyway, all he could do was bare his frills at them, in a vain hope that it would be enough to scare them off.
