It was easier to tell a village that you had no recollection of where you came from, or what had happened to you, than it was to admit to them that you'd been a sacrificial lamb for a death cult to appease gods you didn't believe in. He usually put up a pretty good facade that repelled people enough that they didn't want anything to do with him, and he liked it that way, because getting close to people meant that when he inevitably said something that drove them away...It would hurt them that much more.
It didn't hurt him though, he was fairly sure he didn't know what being close to anyone felt like, he didn't understand people, he didn't understand their emotions and how easily they could break, and his way of dealing with things always seemed to break them really easily. Like that Sean boy, he really hadn't meant to make him cry like that, he'd just been stating fact, but apparently there were some fact that just ought not be stated. Learning to behave like a human was difficult, and sometimes felt like it just wasn't worth it, because people were easy to break, and he had a tendency to do that.
The wounds on his back were still fresh enough that when he pulled off his shirt to give them a chance to breath, it stung, and pulled loose some small area where it was scabbing, but not quite there. He couldn't see what they looked like, but he was acutely aware of the small trails of blood that dribbled down where the scabbing had been opened in places, not bad, but enough to be aware. It burned a lot of the times, or ached and throbbed all along his back, he'd never gone to the villages healers to get it treated, that would require him to show it to someone, to let someone touch it, two things he was altogether unwilling to do, because people were nosy, and he didn't trust anyone not to ask a million questions that he didn't want to answer.
He let out a soft breath through his teeth as he tossed his shirt and coat over the back of a chair in the room, his hut wasn't especially large, that was on purpose, because he didn't need much space and it was easier to navigate that way anyway, everything was in a single room, spacious enough that his dragon could comfortably fit inside, but small enough that navigating without his eyes was manageable. He smiled just a little as he patted their noses, going about giving the zipple back their dinner before figuring out what to do for himself. |

| SEAN AVRID "I'm not helpless... Unless you say so." Sean was well over the mini heart attack he had while the... rather sudden discovery that the whole town knew his secret. He was also unable to stay too mad at Magpie. The guy was blind for one, and probably hadn't meant to make him feel bad. He was one of the mystery's of the town too, from what Sean knew. And as he had promised a few days ago during their... first impressions of one another, he had indeed made a blueberry pie as well as a potato casarrol, struggling to carry both dishes as he made his way over to the boy's home, unable to knock as she opened the door with his foot and stepped inside, looking around for somewhere to put the dishes down as he spoke. "Hey Magpie! I hope you haven't eaten yet I brought-" He cut himself off as he glanced at the man's back, gasping sharply and rushing over, brows furrowed. "Holy hel, how deep are these!" He exclaimed worriedly, looking over the design of the cuts in confusion... he wanted to ask, but that wasn't what was important for the moment. Seeing the blood dripping and the coloring of the scabs meant it was infected. One thing Henry had taught him was that infections were some of the worst things that can happen to your body, and more often than not lead to a slow and painful death... He snapped and started for the door. "Stay right there I'll be right back with some stuff!" He called as he rushed out the door and back towards his hut, his little legs pounding at the ground as he pushed himself forwards, his dragon perking up as his rider entered his home.
"Seashore! Where's the kid Henry gave me?" He demanded to the dragon, who gave him a worried look and nodded his head towards his parent's room. Sean rushed in and within a moment found the box containing herbs and rags and notes he had taken on what to do in various situations. ... He hadn't touched this thing in a while, but by the looks of it his parent shad taken his advice and kept it stocked with fresh supplies. He grabbed the kit and ran back out, having only took five minuets to the trip away and back from Magpie's hut, shutting the door.
"Lay down." He instructed and set the kit down, glancing over the wound once more... What was with those? They were certainly done intentionly by someone. "On your stomach. I can't believe you aren't sick right now. How long have these gone untreated!?" |

He let out a sharp gasp himself when Shean nudged open his door, tensing up like a deer that had just gotten caught in a hunter's sight. He wanted to turn a furious glance back at the kid for not bothering to knock, but all he could do was sit rigid and stunned, before he slowly turned when Sean actually commented on the wounds along his back. He let out a long breath then turned to Sean, ready to tell him to bug off, to leave and never speak of this again. But before he could even open his mouth, the boy was dashing out through the door, and he sighed, "aaaand he's gone...Great." He sighed, then wrinkled his nose, he could smell food that he'd left behind...Had he seriously baked him a pie? And potato casserole if his nose was on point, and it usually was, he sighed and shook his head. Stay right there, Sean had said, like he was going to go anywhere...
He jumped again when he opened the door again and this time turned a hiss towards him, "knock first! It scares me to death when you people just barge in like that!" He let out an annoyed breath when he was told to lie down, glancing over at his bed, "wh-I didn't...Why...For fucks sake...Fine..." The word came out as a drawn out growl before he laid out across his bed on his stomach, propping his chin on his arms and keeping his sightless gaze focused ahead.
He didn't answer him for a good few moments, before he shrugged and spoke in a more subdued tone, "since before I got here. I didn't want anyone else to touch them or...Or to see them..." He scoffed and tossed his head in a gesture like an eye roll, "because people are nosy, and I didn't feel like answering questions so that it could spread through the whole village." He wrinkled his nose distastefully, "they already think I'm an unapproachable asshole...I'd rather keep it that way..." He laid his head down again, sighing, "people are complicated, untrustworthy, I'd rather keep my distance...I don't belong." He went quiet after that, figuring he was already saying too much, too much that this kid probably didn't care to hear. |

| SEAN AVRID "I'm not helpless... Unless you say so." Sean grabbed the rag from the kit and the water canister, wet the rag, and did as Henry had showed him, mashing the herbs in the rag until it was a sticky minty smelling goo. "I don't think whatever happened gives you an excuse to not seek medical help. It's infected. You can get seriously sick and die from this! No one deserves that." He huffed, "Because its infected this is going to sting a little okay? Just bare with me." He gently started to clean the odd cut markings, not daring to ask about them as he carefully as possible dripped the greend mush for the rag and rubbed it in, "Gods this is worse than it looks... You're damn well lucky I saw this. It's a good thing I scared you too! I'd rather die by heart attack then being too silly to get wounds checked so I slowly decayed in my own home!" He shook his head with another sharp huff, making more of the goo in the rag. "Is it still stinging?"

Magpie wrinkled his nose in distaste at that comment, his brows knitting together and an angry expression, "it does this time. It does when you're surrounded by people who would believe a kid was cursed with bad luck for stupid accidents." He scoffed and shook his head, letting out a hiss of pain and wincing visibly as he rubbed the cloth over the wounds, "besides...Who really cares if I died? I have no family, I have no one who would actually miss me. I'd just be gone and people would forget me." He shrugged it off, going quiet for a while as he let him work, his winces and pained sounds petered off a bit after a few minutes, and he finally spoke again, "if you knew...You wouldn't think I was silly..."
He turned his sightless gaze back at him with a questioning look, "what do you think people would think if word got around that the guy they already think is crazy has...Fucked up ritualistic shit cut into his back? They already treat that Larson boy like dirt, and there's even less reason for that...They'd want me gone..." His voice softened a little and he shook his head, "no, it's not stinging anymore...Thank you..." He rested his chin back on his arms and looked ahead, "I'm not too stupid to get help...I just wanted to avoid people trying to tell me I'm...Possessed by some...Demon or something..." He had no reason to trust any of these people...Except...Sean hadn't given him reason NOT to trust him...So maybe he could trust him...Maybe a little, "you...Have questions...Right? I can tell." He snorted, "and I can feel you staring...I don't think it's a story you want to hear though." |

| SEAN AVRID "I'm not helpless... Unless you say so." Sean sighed and sat down on the bed, wiping his hands off on the clean rag and deciding he was done since it wasn't stinging anymore. "I'd miss you. And I'd miss the oppertunity to get to know you, lots of people would miss the chance for you to change their lives or for you to change yours." He exhaled slowly as he tried to find the words to use, "It's your life. You don't have to share it with anyone, but I think if you spoke to someone about it, it would help. Demon ritual or whatever I don't think it's your fault. You're not hurting anyone besides yourself so there's only one problem then." He gently reached out and curiously trailed his finger over the man's back, avoiding the scars. "I've seen some stuff myself... I think I can handle hearing you out ... I mean, you don't have to spill out to me nessesarily. I just think you should talk with someone." |

His expression registered genuine shock when Sean said that he would miss him, shock and a moment of disbelief, "why? Why would you want to get to know me? I was an ass to you." He wrinkled his nose, scoffing softly, "I'm not changing any lives anytime soon." His expression softened a little, as did his voice when he spoke again, "you'd...Really miss me?" He let out a long breath through his teeth, fighting against his better judgement. He was careful as he sat up, turning to face him more, "I wouldn't tell anyone else...I don't know yet if I can trust them...But...You..." He trailed off, turning a serious glance his way, "don't tell anyone...Please..." He would rather they continued thinking he was an unapproachable asshole than some demon or something.
"I didn't forget where I came from...It's just easier than trying to explain..." He paused a moment, then sighed and slipped off the tinted black glasses he always wore, "it wasn't...Entirely a village...It was a relatively small group, there were...Maybe 50 of us total? The island I think, is somewhat close to Berk's waters...I wouldn't have survived otherwise." He pulled his knees to his chest, resting his chin there while he thought out how to tell this, "there was only ever one child around at a time, I think...Because...Well children were merely fodder...That's all I ever was, kept like cattle..." He ran a hand over the scars along his arms, and some criss crossed along his chest, "they whipped me, only fed me to keep me alive, there was never any point that I was interacted with beyond that...Just a cold, dark room...That...Was just my life until I was 16...I think I was ten when they...Blinded me..." He let out a long breath and turned his head to face Sean, "when I was sixteen, they dragged me out, and they marked me...The aim was to send me out listing in a boat until I died, it was a ritual, I've no doubt that they've done it many times before..."
He went quiet as he trailed off, not turning his face to Sean again as he slipped his glasses back on, "I didn't think you would actually bring food for me...Thank you..." He offered him a rare genuine smile, "I can't cook much for myself...I try but...Well it doesn't always work out..." He laughed softly, shaking his head, "still can't fathom why you care so much...But I appreciate it." |

| SEAN AVRID "I'm not helpless... Unless you say so." Sean slowly leaned his head on Magpie, hands in his own lap. "That's... That's really messed up. I can't believe people would have the heart to do all that..." He looked over at the food on the counter. "Ah crap, right. It's no trouble I enjoy cooking... and I enjoy having friends I guess. I don't like knowing I've missed some one special just because I was too shy to introduce myself. Plus, I don't think you're an ass. Being cooped up and treated like that... I can't imagine what that can do to a person's sense of trust." He made a plate for the boy and put the fork in his hand, and the plate in his lap, "I don't think anyone would out you on being some sort of demon, but they would look at you different. I won't say anything... But Hiccup should know about that island... I mean, what if there is another kid on that island going through the same thing?" |

Magpie turned his gaze on him with a long look, before turning away and sighing, "I can believe it. People are cruel, people are selfish, people only want to use other people." His tone softened a little and he leaned into the boy a little bit, the first sort of affection he'd ever really shown to anyone, "except you. You're kind, you care, you're not like everyone else." He looked up when he felt him get up, listening to what he was doing, wrinkling his nose a little as he sniffed out what the boy was doing, "oh..That's...Thank you..." What was this? No one had ever been this kind to him, he wanted to be angry that he was being taken care of...But it was kind of nice.
"Not just trust..." He mused as he took the plate with a grateful nod, "it's...I literally never learned how to do...all this...Interacting with people...I don't know how to...Handle anything...I never know what to say and it always comes out wrong..." He sighed, "I suppose it works...Because it pushes people away, but...I guess I'm still sort of a person to...And I get lonely." He went quiet as he focused on his food, starting to eat before he made a pleased sound, "you're an excellent cook....This is so good! I've never had meals like this before!" He chuckled, but his face fell and became more grave when he brought up his island, "oh no doubt. They're not heavily armed or fortified. They believe their gods protect them because of the rituals." He shrugged, "they have no dragons, nothing to protect him. Wipe them all out, kill them all, I don't care." His voice was flat as he spoke, a cold entering his tone. |

| SEAN AVRID "I'm not helpless... Unless you say so." Sean blushed deeply when the boy said he was... different from everyone else. It wasn't so,etching he had been called before, especially not in a good way. "Ah thanks..." He didn't answer when the man asked what he was doing, seeing no point in it since he had sat down again within the next moment. "I can't say I know the feeling... but I'm here for you if you ever need someone around. I uh... I read a lot. Maybe I could bring one of ,t books here and read them to you?" He offered after the man complemented his cooking, making him beam further.
Hendecided not to comment on the villiage, since he was more than happy to drop the topic and already pretty sure Hiccup wouldn't do such a thing. |
