The Landscape
Outcast island is formed by a large inactive volcano, ash and rock are in no shortage and the entire island itself is made of cooled lava formations. No crops grow and houses are carved from the inside of the sheets of cooled molten rock. Only one plant grows here and it is known as Loki's tree and is grown sparingly. Sunlight is rarely seen due to the high concentration of ash within the air around the island. Breathing can become difficult if one's lungs aren't strong enough, although genetic mutations have helped the people who live here survive better than most. Dragons nest upon the site and are often killed, the war with dragons having not quite ended on this islands shores. The entire landscape is monochrome with blacks, greys, whites, and occasionally fire hues being the entirety of the color spectrum seen. Snow is rare as well as rain, frost being the worst of the weather that is seen within the land.
The people who live on Outcast Island are as tough as the landscape itself. Housing is built on Isolon, an area covered in spires of cooled molten rock. The entire area tunnels downwards to around the tall molten rock formations with small pools of active lava within some areas. The houses are normally carved into the thick sheets of rock with iron doors. Weaklings are not welcome among the strength of the whole community and it is often that they are picked off in the need for survival. The entire island is separated into several areas and is actually quite large. The entrance for boats and dragons alike is known Hels Gate, the name lovingly given due to the cracking molten rock formations that shape a foreboding arch within the land. Elysium is the name given to the dungeons, where traitors, thieves, slaves, and anyone taken as a hostage are kept. It is rumored that dragons are also housed there as well to provide entertainment for the Outcasts. The Necroshire is the killing arena for the Outcasts, battles of all different kinds are held here as well as dragon training. The residential area of Isolon is the main housing district of all Outcasts as it is the most hospitable place on the island. At the top of the tallest spire is known as the The Wickeds, where Soothsayers and those of spiritual nature live so that they are the closest to the gods. The last main building is known as Solitude, meals, feasts, meetings, and any other social gatherings are held here and is where the chiefs throne sits. Finally there is Cruelfield, the nesting site of the dragons and is farthest off from those that live within Outcast Island.
Outcast Culture and Customs
Outcasts live and die with a simple goal in mind survive as long as you can. Many find their way of life disturbing, grotesque, disgusting, barbaric and simply not a way to live, Outcasts on the other hand find that there is no other way to live.
Those that are weaker than the rest are killed without mercy, emotions having no meaning to any Outcast as it makes them weak. Women are expected to be just as strong as men and if they fall to a weaker state they are taken as brides or slaves. The weaklings that are killed or those that fall in battle are stored and eaten. Food is food no matter where it comes from, cooking not a skill needed as most meals are served raw. Human is considered a delicacy and is eaten during feasts, treaty signings, and is even considered an honor to some. Dragon is also eaten but considered a simple prey animal rather than an actual delicacy. Every Outcast is expected to have at least one dragon trophy, normally one of their first kills. Most have walls lined with trophies, dragon heads mounted for perfect display. No part of the body is wasted, food is food no matter its origins and true Outcasts do not allow themselves to be weakened or sick.
Children when at the age of six are enrolled into dragon training. Young boys have no choice in the matter and if they are killed then they then become the families next meal or served in a feast if killed on the first day of training. Young girls have a choice, they are either served as slaves, killed, or go into dragon training depending on their strengths. There are rare exceptions to this if the Soothsayers have considered a child to be spared for one reason or another, either due to a new speaker for the gods in a child or a prophecy that is needed within them. They are expected to finish training by the age of ten where they fight for the right to slay their first monstrous nightmare. The child that gains this honor then receives praise and a specialized weapon of their choice from the chief. They are then considered true Outcasts and join their elders in battle and can even begin solo missions or join a specialized task force that are hand picked by the chief.
Marriage is not something that is focused on, nor is romance or even simple affection. Children are normally raised by the whole village and sometimes don't even know who their birth parents are due to them being killed or them simply not wanting to weaken their children with emotions. Feelings as a whole are described as something that makes one weak and the only ones who gain power from it are the Soothsayers. They are always female and speak to the gods, they are the only ones who are allowed feelings as they are simply vessels that speak for the gods. Their words are held at a finer price than gold and no one goes against their wishes. They hardly ever leave their spire and only consume human flesh as to keep themselves pure from the taint of dragons.
