### words for @tag "Hiccup" - "Toothless" A PERFECTLY CONSTRUCTED ALIBI He didn't know why this had started happening, whether by stress or some cruel joke that the gods decided to play on him for some indiscretion that he didn't recall commiting against them...Whatever the case, his sleep had not been peaceful for a few months now, and it tended to show. He tried to stave off the horrific things that danced through his sleeping mind, with Dragon Nip in every form he could think to take it...Maybe sometimes too much of the stuff...But nothing ever seemed to help, and so more often than not he found himself writhing through the night as he was attacked by his own mind, sometimes the nightmares were irrelevant, just horrifying images and scenes that startled him awake gasping for breath and feeling an overwhelming feeling of wrongness.
But sometimes he had night terrors, horrible jolts of panic inducing horrors that made him sob and gasp for breath in his sleep, trapped somewhere between the waking world and the prison of his own mind as he was tortured relentlessly by it, he could never seem to jolt himself awake from these like he could from the nightmares, he wouldn't even realize they were happening if he didn't often remember these things with vivid detail when he finally pulled his bleary eyes open the next morning. People had started to notice in some way that their chief was far from okay, at least in the physical sense, his eyes never seemed to want to stay all the way open, they were heavy and shadowed with fatigue, and sometimes he fell asleep where he was standing, only to be jolted awake again, not even finding solace in the brief naps in the daylight hours.
Tonight was bad, some nights were less taxing, but his body writhed and clenched as he gasped and panted in a way that looked like it would leave him sore in the morning, fingers gripping at the blankets so tight his knuckles were white as he kicked and tossed in his sleep, he'd taken to sleeping without the metal prosthetic, after too many bruises where he'd kicked himself. He was tangled in his blankets as his sobbing became more desperate, whimpers became cries and cries became earnest screams, the kind that someone fearing for their life might make. His eyes flitted between opened and closed, but it was clear that he was still trapped asleep.

Valka had fallen into an uneasy sleep late at night, the sounds of her son in the other room felt like a part of her own nightmare... until he started screaming. The woman kept up, her dragon in the hallway flopping to the ground from being startled awake. Valka stumbled out of her room and into Hiccup's, grabbing the writhing boy's sheets and throwing them aside before she shook his shoulders. "Hiccup! Hiccup wake up!" She plead and sat herself on his bed, trying to pull him closer, now fully awake herself and thankful her son wasn't actually being murdered in his sleep... That possibility seemed to be becoming more a possibility now, as rumors had reached her ears from one or two villiage friends. WORDS ● TAGGED ● NOTES

### words for @tag "Hiccup" - "Toothless" A PERFECTLY CONSTRUCTED ALIBI His breathing only seemed to become more labored when he was grabbed and shaken, the action brought his arms out flailing and pushing against the source of the restraint as his mind drew up terrifying visions to cope with the act. His screaming in response became more pleading, more desperate for whatever was attacking him to stop as more tears bubbled up into his good eye, his hands came up to grip at his mother's shirt in the absence of his blankets, and he was tense and trembling for a moment before his eyes popped open and he jolted violently awake, looking around like he had absolutely no idea where he was for a good few minutes before his eyes blinked into focus, resting on Valka's face as he took in the situation.
The feeling that overcame him as he stared at her was complete and utter panic, and his eyes filled with tears as he collapsed against her, shaking like a leaf in her arms as he felt the floodgates of vulnerability open, "M-mom..." He mumbled the words against her, broken by his shaking voice, "I'm sorry...I'm sorry...I d-didn't mean to wake you..." It was all he could think to say, words broken by his panicked breathing as he tried and failed to calm himself down, everything still felt so fresh and vivid in his head...It always did...He let out a struggled whimper against her as his tears continue to flow freely, "I can't...I can't take this anymore..."

The woman wasn't affected by the shove other than it scaring her, that her son was having such horrible terrors keeping him hostage under their dark influence... "Don't be sorry. Please," She hugged her son against her lovingly, holding him and rocking slightly as she had once or twice before. "You're the one suffering here love... Calm down, you're safe in my arms." She said softly, hand stringing through his brown locks "No one can harm you. No one can hurt you. Everyone here loves you." She let out a soft sigh, guesturing that it was okay for the dragons curiously and worriedly peeking in the door to come in. WORDS ● TAGGED ● NOTES

### words for @tag "Hiccup" - "Toothless" A PERFECTLY CONSTRUCTED ALIBI Slowly, his breathing began to calm as the panic began to ebb away, leaving an exhausted, drained feeling in its wake. He didn't fight being pulled close as he pressed his face into her warm arms, allowing himself to be cradled gently, he was overwhelmed, completely and utterly sick and tired of every night seemingly being this way. He couldn't remember the last time he'd slept the night through, it was always this, always waking up afraid for his life from the monsters that seemed to live inside his head like bees in a beehive, "I'm not safe anywhere..." His words were mumbled in a defeated way, "even my own mind is trying to destroy me..." It was a hopeless thought, feeling unsafe even in his own dreams, with nowhere to escape to.
He heard the door creak as Toothless nosed his way in, making a concerned noise upon seeing the man like that. He didn't speak, there wasn't anything he could say that would chase away these feelings that he'd come to know intimately, he could feel Hiccup's fear and dread coming off of him in waves, and nosed his head up under his arm as he rested half on the bed, crooning soothingly as Hiccup pulled his head closer with the arm that was slung over it, "thanks Bud...Both of you..." He could still feel his heart jack-hammering rapidly in his chest, the fear still clung like cobwebs and his showed in his eyes, but he'd calmed as much as he could for the moment.

"The best people seem to suffer the worst," Valka mumbled and hugged her son tightly. "I wish I could tell you that they're just nightmares, that they can't hurt you if you're strong... but I know how it really is, and I won't lie to you to give you false comfort that won't comfort you." She squeezed him more, "And I curse the name of whatever god bestows all this bad upon you, mocking us all the damn time... but you listen to me Hiccup. You aren't alone. You don't have to be alone and face this all by yourself. I can't see your dreams but we can be here for you. To wake you up..." She eased away, holding back tears. Hearing her sons screams of terror and pain every night had been working terrors into her own sleep when she was able to sleep herself.
She grabbed Hiccup's hand and breathed out, looking down at Toothless... what words could a mother give to her son when indeed his own mind was out to get him?

### words for @tag "Hiccup" - "Toothless" A PERFECTLY CONSTRUCTED ALIBI Hiccup wanted nothing more than to find comfort somewhere in her warm embrace, and he did on some level, leaning into her arms and looking tired beyond his years as he sighed heavily, "trouble finds me because I tread where no one else will...And if nightmares and enemies are what comes out of the good that I've done...Then those are worth it..." He rubbed a hand over his tired eyes, giving her a weak smile, "I would live this life a thousand times over, suffering and all, if I got to end up exactly where I am."
He glanced down, chuckling softly when Toothless nudged his cheek with his nose, "but I'm still only human...And a body can only take so many beatings before it starts to wear down and break..." He reached a hand to rub over his shoulder, "I can feel it worse some days than others, everything aches, or twinges..." He relaxed against the night fury's side when he crawled up to lay behind him, comforted by his warmth.
His good eye widened in surprise when his hand was taken and he laughed softly, "would it be silly to ask if I could sleep with you tonight?" He glanced to the side, "I don't really think I can sleep alone...and having you two here helps..." It was a childish request, he realized, not the kind of thing a grown man and a chief should be asking for, but he needed the comfort, he was still only human.

Valka smiled weakly at her son, "You're brave, Hiccup. You're more a Viking than any man or woman ever were before you. You've done so much, and you continue to do... I wish..." She stopped herself and sighed... I wish your father could have seen it.
At the question of sleeping together the woman felt a tear roll from her eye, her body betraying her by letting it slip. "Do you even need to ask?" She laughed out the words through the breaking in her voice. All those years she could have been sleeping with him had she not left. She could have been the one to protect him. She could have saved him from his own father. WORDS ● TAGGED ● NOTES

### words for @tag "Hiccup" - "Toothless" A PERFECTLY CONSTRUCTED ALIBI Hiccup seemed to pick up on her train of thought when her words trailed off, and he swallowed a hard lump, looking down and nodding, "dad he...Always liked to tell people that I'd never be a real viking, and I always felt...Kind of okay with it..." He sighed and looked to the side, closing his good eye thoughtfully, "I didn't feel like I deserved to call myself a viking..." He shook his head, "I still don't...I'm not brave, not really, I'm just too stubborn to know when to lay down and quit." He laughed at this, it was sometimes wild to think back on everything that had happened in such a short time, quick enough to make one's head spin.
His face lit up though when she spoke and he laughed, "kind of...I mean that's not exactly the most chiefly thing to do..." He looked down, "but it'd be nice..." He lifted a hand after a moment to brush the tear from her eye, "you don't have to do this alone either..." He glanced down, "it's still...Different...Having you here...It still hurts knowing you...Like...I needed you...We could have done so much..." He let out a sigh, "but that doesn't matter, I'm here if you need me...You shouldn't have to do this alone anymore than I should." He still had a lot of difficult emotions, about this and about her to parse, but he was glad she was here.
