Gladios was at a loss without his partner in crime. Keirr was his partner that always told him to put what where, to do what how, and to think ... Hell the tree of a man would put his shirt on backwards every day if it wasn't for his little buddy. Of course he was only a builder for the dragon hunters. All he did was build cages and help with moving heavy things. Never had be been assigned a real mission, hell he didn't really even know the people he was working for, or what he was building. All he knew was that he had friends, and he had food. What else could a person need? More friends and more food?
What kind of job was he needed for? Apparently being the only guard on this damn island of hell. He had rations, and could fish if he needed to, but why was he told he couldn't feed a dragon? Was that what he was guarding? If he was here to protect a dragon- that's what he was there for, right? He looked over at the cave where the net and a black bundle of scales inside it lay... That was the dragon... probably. Had it done something bad? Why was Viggo so intent on not letting it out? He said something about missing a tail. could it fly without a tail? He turned his head and opened his mouth to ask the question, but Keirr wasn't there to answer, so he quickly shut it instead.
He had spent a little time setting up his tent and a fire close to the cage, curiously looking at the bundle inside, and then to the food inside the rations box. It had been a few days... The poor thing didn't have any food, but he had been considerate enough to fill up the water trough inside daily by using a bucket, even though Viggo had directly told him not to. It wasn't like anyone was there to stop him. Maybe this was a test, and maybe Viggo wanted to see if he would do the right thing? ... He grabbed some fish from what he had caught that day and cautiously stood in front of the cage.
"Mr Dragon?" He said worriedly, peeking around the dragon proof bars as he laid the bucket inside, having to squeeze it through, the bucket making slight scraping sounds before it popped through on the other side, and gently the man pushed it closer, his other hand slowly pulling the knife from his pocket. "Come here and I'll cut the net off, okay?... Must be hard to walk with it tangled on you..."

So I'm fanning the flames to climb so high It felt like years had passed, but he knew it had only been a month at most, maybe two, months of being moved from one cage to another, of being poked and prodded and jeered at. He'd done his best to fight back, he'd tried so hard to escape every chance he'd gotten to try, but he was tired, he was exhausted and he was starving. The neglect was clear to anyone who knew what a neglected dragon looked like, and his eyes had become much more listless as he started to let them move him from one cage to another.
He was on Aska now, he didn't know why, he didn't care, he only knew that he was stuck here with a single man who didn't seem entirely too bright, but this human had been nicer to him than the other humans, in the sense that he hadn't shouted or prodded at him, in fact, Toothless found himself curiously watching him, watching his every movement as he conducted his business, he didn't read threat from him, he read the look of someone who was just doing what they were told, someone who didn't even seem to fully understand that.
He jerked his head up when he heard the man speak to him, narrowing his eyes just a little as he backed up in the cage, still wary despite his thoughts about this human, he was afraid, far from home and away from Hiccup, and he was through being screwed with.
His nose twitched though when he smelled fish, and he looked up, catching the man's words and responding with a soft croon, cautiously scooting closer as best as he could in his tangled state. He didn't waste time ravenously downing the fish, his hunger showing through those desperate motions.

Gladios smiled gently at the large creature as it ate. Who knew how long the poor guy had gone without anything at all. His hazel eyes looked the scaled being over. One thing he understood was instinct. Holding a knife near a scared animal wasn't ever something that could end well, but he had to try, right? He slowly and carefully grabbed a loose bit of net, using the knife to cut away from the dragon to show he was only trying to help, humming under his breath as he did so. His gaze flickered to the dragon's tail as he tore the rest of the netting apart, since it was pretty old it almost fell away under his touch, and he pocketed the knife again. "What happened to your tail, huh? I don't know much about you guys but that bit there looks like it's missing." He said and tilted his head, half believing the creature could respond to him. If it could fly then why shouldn't be able to talk? He didn't know any better.
"You're just a big ol' cat aren't you?" He asked with a smile coming to his lips, tilting his head the other way, biting his lip in slight nervousness as he held his hand out, wondering if the dragon would allow himself to be touched.

So I'm fanning the flames to climb so high The Night Fury gave the man an inquisitive look when he smiled, flicking his tongue around his mouth when he finished the fish off and letting out a grumble. He spotted the knife and lowered himself down against the bottom of the cage, letting out a fearful snarl at the man as he started to get close with it, he knew better than to trust most kind smiles, so he was understandably wary as he was approached with the shining blade. However, when he felt the man grab at the netting and begin cutting it away, his snarl died down, into just a suspiciously curious glance. He felt his limbs become easier to move as the last of the net was pulled away, and when he realized he was free of those bindings at least, he hopped up and did a relieved turn in the cage, rumbling out a crooning sound as he studied the man once more.
His eyes lit up a little when he reached his hand into the cage, and he crept closer, the gesture was familiar in the worst kind of way, and it only made his homesickness worse, he missed Hiccup, he missed Berk, and he was starting to wonder if he would ever see it again. He let out a sad little croon as he pressed his nose to the man's hand, feeling his heart ache for something he never thought he would have to miss this deeply.

Gladios beamed as the dragon nuzzled his nose against his hand, gently petting him over the head form where he could reach from outside the cage. He soon pulled away, hands on his hips as wheels turned in his brain. "This isn't right..." He said after a moment, shaking his head. No creature this loving should be locked up. Test or not this was insane, evil. All Gladios had used his life to do was build things for whoever was paying him. All this time he was working for a man who harmed beautiful creatures like this? He huffed and looked at the key hole. He hadn't been given any keys, of course, but that didn't mean he couldn't open the door. He had built these things for a living after all. He suddenly jammed his knife into the crease that met the lock and the cage, and then using brute force pried it open till it popped all the way open, smacking him in the face and cutting his hand as the knife fell away. With a mumbled curse he stepped back. "I promise I'll help you off this island if you don't eat me." He said and grabbed the knife again, pocketing it once more and wiped the small cut on his hand in his shirt, rubbing his face with his other hand before he went back to sit beside the fire, grabbing some apples from the crate beside him and huffing.
"Do you have a name? I'm pretty sure it's not Mr Dragon." WORDS ● TAGGED ● NOTES

So I'm fanning the flames to climb so high If he closed his eyes, he could almost pretend...But it wasn't the same, this man's hand was so much bigger, and the smell was all wrong, still, it was the first king contact he'd had in what felt like forever, so he bumped and nudged his nose into the man's hand as he patted his head, coming closer to him and letting out a low warble in response. He could understand the man's words, and he could understand the emotion behind them, he half hoped that somehow this human could meet Hiccup someday, he seemed compassionate, he seemed to care the same way his rider cared. Thinking of Hiccup made him painfully aware of how bare his back felt, he was glad, at least, that Viggo had sent the tail back to Hiccup...That was the part that meant the most to the dragon.
He made a surprised sound when he heard the commotion, stepping back as he watched him try to force the cage door open, lifting a foot to press into it with force to try and help. When it swung open he stumbled forwards a little bit, his movements careful as he stepped out of the cage. He followed the man to the campfire, curling up close and giving him a soft warble before he opened his mouth to show off his lack of teeth, unsure if he would get it, but it was worth a shot. After a moment he nudged him again, giving a hungry rumble.

Gladios was thankful the dragon didn't pounce him, as that would mean not only had he done the wrong thing, but he would be dead. He wasn't sure which was worse. He smiled as the dragon curled up near him, watching him with a raised brow as he opened his mouth. "No teeth? ... Is your name Toothless?" He asked half jokingly, though when the beast nudged him, sounding rather hungry, he pulled another crate over, filled with some kind of pork or beef jerky, both he didn't eat due to his preference for ... not meat. "We have apples and too much jerky, take your pick." He said and then gave an affectionate pat to Toothless' side. Perhaps that guesture just meant he was hungry? Toothless was a fitting name for him he supposed,
"I bet you have a story, don't you? To end up here you would think you would... Feels odd, being out like this... You would think I was the one who spent his whole life in a cage... making cages." He sighed heavily, shaking his head before he flopped back against the mat he had in the bottom of his tent, "How am I going to get you out of here?"

So I'm fanning the flames to climb so high The Night Fury let out a soft sound when the man got his name in one go, thoroughly surprised by that fact given that this human didn't seem like one of the brightest ones, though his name was said in a more joking tone, so he wasn't sure if it would stick...It was better than Mr.Dragon at any rate. He sniffed at the crate, deciding to forego the apples as he started to eagerly lap up and eat the jerky, snuffling into the basket and grumbling as he did. He already felt better with something in his stomach, more alert, and in his alert state he could feel the ache to get home doubly powerful. He knew the way home, it was as ingrained an instinct as breathing.
He got to his feet and stepped to the edge of the water, ears falling as he let out a long, low sound, glancing back at the man when he spoke, letting out a soft huff before he came and flopped back down close to the man, nudging his nose under his hand. He'd never imagined when he was wild that he would crave human touch the way he did, but he did, he missed Hiccup's touch more than anything, but this human was kind. He turned his eyes over to him and gave the grumbling equivalent of an 'I don't know', until his eyes caught something and he poked his head up.
It was a little bit sneaky, this man would have no way off this island without that boat...But maybe...He let out a soft croon and got to his feet, stepping just enough into the water to nudge at the craft with his nose.

Gladios watched the dragon eat wit a happy smile, though it was obvious the creature was agitated. Maybe he had a family to go to? Maybe this dragon was a father, or maybe he was still young and was a cub? ... Or maybe he was a human's companion? For a creature that big it was odd he was so friendly towards people, but no matter what they were all equally as bad. He felt bad that he was apart of the people keeping this beautiful thing hostage. When it came back to his side he pet it for the moments it lasted before the nightfury looked as if a light had gone on in his head. This creature must be smart, smarter than him anyway.
"The boat? If you know where you're going then you can take it." He said with a smile, "Should I go ahead and get pushing? If so you may want to be inside when I do that." He said and pat the dragon's back lightly, "I'll be fine here... I'll say someone came after you and knocked me out or something... Hopefully he'll believe me."

So I'm fanning the flames to climb so high Toothless considered the man's words for a moment, it had been a long time since he'd had a meal or a comfortable rest, it had been a long time since he's stretched his legs or even moved at all, how far would he really get if he climbed into this boat now and sailed off? He wouldn't last long with no energy, the food he'd eaten would last him a while, but he knew where he was, and he knew approximately how to get back to Berk, it would take days to get back assuming the tide stayed on his side, he could cut that down using his wings as sails, but even still...He couldn't do this with as little energy as he had.
He warbled out a sound after a moment, coming back to curl up beside the man again. Morning. I'll leave in the morning. He mused to himself as he looked over his tail, it was so foreign, the fin that was undamaged before had gotten removed, much like the other, he curled it close and licked at the place that was scarred and scabbing, it didn't hurt anymore, but it was still inconvenient. He was sure Hiccup could fix this, he was sure once he got home, Hiccup would fix this.

The large brunett laid himself up with the dragon, wondering if maybe the beast was trying to get as much sleep and energy as possible before he pushed himself into the unknown sea, unknown to Gladios anyway. Like most things, the ocean was a mystery to the man. Why was there so much water? Why was it so big? What made tides? What made waves? He hoped Keirr would be ready for the army of questions he had in tow. For the moment Gladios was singing under his breath, words he could hardly remember from when he was little that he heard traders singing or humming. Something about the gentle rocking of waves, almost like a lullaby, and pet Toothless as he started to drift to sleep.
In the morning, if you could even call it that since the sun wasn't even up, Gladios woke and started to set to work, setting up his nets and fishing lines, leaving the dragon to sleep for a while longer while he did his daily chores. WORDS ● TAGGED ● NOTES

So I'm fanning the flames to climb so high Sleep had come easy for the ebony dragon, pulled into it deeply by the exhaustion that came from not sleeping well any night prior, it was difficult to sleep when you were netted and caged, unable to curl up or find a comfortable way to spread out. So he slept somewhat late into the morning before he finally began to stir, yawning wide before looking around for the human that has freed him. He felt distinctly better this morning than he had in a long time, his eyes finally found the man and he got to his feet, stretching out each leg in turn before doing the same for his wings.
When the stiffness of sleep had left, he found the man putting out the lines, snuffling curiously to find out what he was doing before rumbling softly, nudging him in the back and flicking a tongue over his mouth, clearly looking for breakfast before he finally set out on the long journey home.

Gladios was in the middle of seeing if the nets were filled enough to pull up, smiling with a small laugh as the dragon nudged him. "Some one must be hungry, yeah?" He hummed and yanked the net up, which had plenty of fish for the dragon. He was more than glad he had thought to set them out early. "Well," He huffed with the effort it took to lift the net, dragging it up enough so that no fish could escape back into their home before he opened it, "Dig in buddy, S'all yours." He gave Toothless' head a firm pat as he tugged the net away, leaving just the fish in front of the dragon as he set the contraption up again, "When you're done eating you can get on the boat and I'll help push you out enough that the current won't pull you back too much... I hope you have luck on your side, and that you're as smart as you look, otherwise you're not gonna get far." WORDS ● TAGGED ● NOTES
