[googlefont="Playfair Display"][googlefont="Josefin Sans"] This is the end Hold your breath and count to ten Feel the earth move and then, hear my heart burst again [attr="class","itokaytext"]It felt like years had dragged by in the span of months, every day bled together more and more as time ticked on, every hour and every minute blurred in the haze of depression that had clutched at the young chief's heart like a clawed hand, squeezing so tightly that it seemed to cut off the circulation and leave it deadened and black. He couldn't remember the last time he felt anything in earnest, anything at all, most things seemed to just make him tired, and he was sure now that most people in the village were starting to pick up why, starting to pick up that something was deeply wrong. How could they not? Toothless was gone and Hiccup hadn't rallied a search party, what else could that mean?
He was becoming more reclusive though, less inclined to speak to anyone for more than a few minutes, more prone to locking himself away for hours, days, mostly sleeping, sometimes reading, but he'd long since lost the ability to cry, he was past the point of grief, past the point of being able to feel that hollow sadness, it was just emptiness as his brain slowly shut down to the world around him. The only thing keeping him tethered anymore was his duties to the village, to his people.
And the worst part of this was how much he hated himself for giving up, how much he hated himself knowing that this was his fault, knowing that he couldn't do anything to bring him back, to apologize, to make it better.
He hated himself because he couldn't fix this.

Henretta had been busy with getting herself situated on the edge, but people who had been flying back and forth from Berk has brought back odd news about Hiccup acting strange. Not wanting any rumors to sully her mood she went to investigate herself, flying back to Berk with her beloved dragon and took off in the dead of night so no one would ask where she was, as they tended to do when someone crazy as herself was away. Normally she'd be causing trouble in their eyes, looking for dragons or trappers to fight on her own. Tonight was no such mission thankfully.
She landed on Berk and went right to her target, rather than climbing into the window she jumped off of Gummy's back as he flew past it and basically flew in, landing on ... a blanket and pillow where Toothless usually slept. Oh no. The woman stood quickly, dusting herself off and glaring at Hiccup. With the way he looked that only meant the rumors must be the least bit true.
"Where is Toothless." She demanded with a low voice, fists clenched as she approached the chief. WORDS ● TAGGED ● NOTES

[googlefont="Playfair Display"][googlefont="Josefin Sans"] This is the end Hold your breath and count to ten Feel the earth move and then, hear my heart burst again [attr="class","itokaytext"]He was sitting at the table that he usually used for planning, sketching, though none of that had been done in a while, for the moment he was hunched over with his head in his hands, eyes glancing over the tail piece that sat on the table in front of him, his finger traced the fabric as his eyes looked on, empty and cold.
He barely reacted when Henry literally flew through his window, only glancing her way when she finally spoke, "you're smart. You figure it out." His tone was needlessly biting, but didn't hold any fire, just bitterness. After a moment he got to his feet, holding up the fin and spreading it out with a scathing look in his eyes, "I'm surprised it's taken people this long to notice. Viggo sent me this, wrapped up in a snug little package." He set it down, then slumped back in the chair, "Toothless is gone, he's dead, and it's my fault." He knew it hadn't been him that laid the final blow, but it might as well have been right? His words had caused Toothless to run, and running had allowed Viggo to capture him.

Henretta was shocked for only a moment, eyes narrowing as she lifted her goggles off her eyes and onto her forehead, how could he be sitting there just so lifeless and lazy, yeah his dragon was dead but why wasn't he going after the killer! Something about a man named Viggo... she had heard stories about how they had fought in the past. "So why aren't you out there looking for him, huh?" She grabbed his chair, kicking the leg out so that it fell back, but her hand on the back of it kept it balanced so that Hiccup didn't fall back ... not yet anyway. "I see what you're doing and you're as sick as Viggo for doing it, wallowing here like a child who's lost his mother and can't do anything about it. What kind of leader is this pathetic." She hissed coldly, teeth knashing as she spoke, anger boiling in her more and more she thought about what that poor dragon must have gone through, "You're doing exactly what Viggo wants you to do! He killed your dragon so you'd give up, didn't he? And because you gave up, he will just kill more dragons. And if you let him kill more dragons then you wasted Toothless' life. Wasted his life, Hiccup. Do you really want that on your hands? You're sitting in here feeling bad for your dragon, be the hero of Berk when you would let your brother die in vain?!"
She sat his chair upright abruptly, shaking her head with a scoff, "People look up to you, they think you're a great guy who made peace with the dragons, but you're just a guy who uses them to escape responsibility and cries for years after he's lost them, because he was too reckless to take care of his so called brother. Dead or not you owe him! If it really is your fault gen get your ass out and make up for it!" WORDS ● TAGGED ● NOTES

[googlefont="Playfair Display"][googlefont="Josefin Sans"] This is the end Hold your breath and count to ten Feel the earth move and then, hear my heart burst again [attr="class","itokaytext"]He wasn't expecting the explosion from the girl, but really, he wasn't surprised once the tirade started. It wasn't like her words were particularly untrue, they were words he'd thrown at himself over and over again since this had happened, since this whole waking nightmare started, but they were words countered with other words that created an argument in his head that kept him rooted here, where people needed him, and he'd been doing what people asked, everything they asked, he'd been breaking his back to be a leader to his people despite how much it killed him that he couldn't just run off and enact some wild revenge plan, so her words made his eyes burn with a fire and a fury that they hadn't had in what felt like the better part of a long while.
"And If I leave I might never come back!" His words were shouted as he got to his feet, fists shaking with how tightly they were clenched, he didn't get angry this way often, but her words had struck a raw nerve and now he felt like they were tumbling out, "and then Berk has no chief! I'm not afraid to die, but I'm afraid of Berk losing another chief in less than a year!" He was breathing hard now, slamming his fist against the table as he glared at her, "you don't think I'd love nothing more than to just fly off and kill that bastard?! You don't think it guts me every day when I realize that I can't just do that!?" He didn't care if he was overheard, "my people come first, Henry! My village comes first!" Angry tears bubbled in the corners of his eyes as he grabbed the knife that had been sent with the package, slamming it down into the wood of the table with force.
"Don't assume that I've found this easy, and don't you dare imply that I take this lightly!" He pulled the knife out and held it out at her, the gesture was less meant to threaten her, he wouldn't hurt her no matter how angry he was, but was more to make a point, "I would give anything to bury this fucking knife back in his throat for what he took from me!" He lowered it, letting out a heavy breath as he tried to calm himself. She was right though, he did owe it to Toothless, didn't he? He looked over the knife with a thoughtful expression, the village had other people to lead it...And it wasn't like he was afraid to die anymore, "but I guess if I die, at least I died trying, right? At least I'll die the man they remembered me as...Not the shell I've let myself become..."

Henry had half of what she wanted from Hiccup when he exploded, words being thrown back and forth as he pulled the knife. She wasn't afraid of him, he wouldn't do anything she knew. He was just trying to make a point, she would have done the same... though if she was the one wielding a weapon she would most likely use the thing too. Henry didn't let the smirk through as Hiccup's last words hit her. "Just because you're acting like your father with your chief duties doesn't mean you're being a good chief. They need someone who isn't sitting on his ass all day upset and not talking to them. At least you're father bonded with people and was himself. these villagers look up to you as the dragon tamer too. You're lying to their faces every day being chief if you don't hold your end of the bargain you started and pushed them into." She grabbed his wrist holding the knife, her grip tight, looking him dead in the eyes, "If you really love him you wouldn't let this go on. If you don't go looking for Viggo then I will, and I know plenty of other Vikings that you inspired that would do the same." template by Sammy @ Adox 2.0

[googlefont="Playfair Display"][googlefont="Josefin Sans"] This is the end Hold your breath and count to ten Feel the earth move and then, hear my heart burst again [attr="class","itokaytext"]He couldn't believe the audacity of her words when she spoke again, and his nose wrinkled in a face that was almost a snarl as he glared down into her eyes, it made the hair stand on end as he felt that hot fury run fast with his blood, pumped by a rapidly beating heart, "y-you..." His words came out as a growl, before they rose to a louder tone again, "don't you think I know that!?" He threw his arms up in the air and let out a bitter laugh, "surprise surprise! Hiccup's nothing like his father! Hiccup's not the chief his father was!" He slammed his hand down, "I KNOW THAT! I've been trying to convince everyone else of that for years!"
He put a hand to his chest and stared, half hysterical, "I'm just one person! I've always been just one person! I never asked anyone to see me the way they see me! I never toted myself as a dragon master, I've never been anything but myself!" He was breathing hard again, having not paused to breath much in his words, when she took his wrist, he gave her a steady expression, his eyes clear for the first time in a long time.
"No." He looked to the knife in his hand, squeezing the handle tightly, "this is my fight. He killed my brother." He gave her a hard expression, a warning in his eyes, "don't let anyone follow me. I'm going alone." He let out a steady breath, burying the knife in the wood of his table again, "I'll leave tonight, by boat, I'm not risking any lives but my own doing this." He looked tired as he sighed, feeling the weight of a thousand years on his shoulders, "if I don't come back...At...At least tell everyone I tried, okay?" He put a hand on her shoulder, giving her a weary smile, "and thank you...I think I needed that kick in the ass..."

Henretta was afraid she was loosing him for a moment, smirking triumphantly when he spoke in a more firm tone, something inside him seeming to spark. She put a hand on his shoulder, suddenly pulling him close, arms tightly winding around the brunet's torso, and she let out a sigh of relief. "You'll come back. Your dragon may be gone from sight but he's with you in spirit. I'll make sure no one follows... and if you aren't back in a week then I'll tell Valka and Gobber we have plans to make." She pulled away with a mischievous glint in her eyes, and put her goggles back over her eyes, "You wouldn't need me to kick words up your ass if you'd talk to people you know. You're a chief, yeah, but your friends that already know what a dragon loving dork you are will understand." She punched his shoulder lightly, barely enough to hurt, but she wanted to get her point across in a friendly manner since she already had a lung battle with him, "See you."

[googlefont="Playfair Display"][googlefont="Josefin Sans"] This is the end Hold your breath and count to ten Feel the earth move and then, hear my heart burst again [attr="class","itokaytext"]His eyes widened a little in surprise when she pulled him into a tight hug, and his face softened into a sincere smile as he slipped his arms around her to hug her back. When he pulled away though, his eyes were serious again, his tone grave, "Henry I don't want you, or mom, or anyone coming after me." He took her wrists in his hands, holding her there with a long stare, "I can't die knowing that any of you might end up dead because of me." He knew she wouldn't listen, he knew the wild woman would do what she felt was right, whether it was smart or not, but he could at least tell himself that he tried.
He let out a sigh at that and nodded, giving her a tired smirk in return, "there's worlds of truth to that statement." He lifted his hands when she socked him, nodding, "see you, Henry." When she was gone, he sighed and turned back to the table, eyes running over the tail fin with a sad glint before they became severe.
He didn't know how long it would take, he had no idea where Viggo was, he had no idea where to even begin looking for him, but Henry had been right, he needed to do this, no matter what it took, no matter what outcome this came to. He was entirely aware of the fact that he could die, that Viggo could kill him, but death trying to fight for his dragon's honor was better than wasting away and letting himself fester in his own grief, that wasn't the viking way, and he was every bit the viking any of the others were.
He'd gone out through the window, much more careful this time as he climbed down to the ground below, trying to make as little noise as possible despite the extra weight that the shield on his back added, he was as armed as he could manage to be, with a full quiver of arrows and his sword on his hip, he was going to fight Viggo hand to hand, man to man, this was personal.
He took a look back at the village from the docks as he made his way down to the boat he intended to sail, it was small, quick, with a sail emblazoned with the Berk crest. He sighed as he picked up the baskets of rations that he intended to bring with him, he knew he could fish on the way if he needed to. He couldn't help the yawning pit of homesickness already aching in his stomach as he walked the docks to wards the ship.

Valkahad been listening in on Henry and Hiccup's conversation through the door, her ear had been pressed against his while her heart wretched as the two wen back and forth. She knew something had been wrong when she came back from dealing with Dagur, since Hiccup was acting so poorly and Toothless wan't around. She should have sat down with her son an talked with him about it. Asked him why rather then wait for him to come to her, how could she have been so foolish? What kind of mother would have let this go on for so long!?
She lowly walked up to the boat Hiccup was setting up for himself and this journey. She knew that there was no way to talk her beloved son out of this, and in her heart she knew it was the right thing to do. With a sad look in her eyes, and Cloudjumper by her side, she looked down at Hiccup, clearing her throat.
"You'd leave without saying goodbye?" She said after a moment, arms crossed over her chest as she gave the young chief a half hearted smile. Her mind was reeling. Her son could very well die doing this, but if it were her dragon... she would have stopped at nothing to do the same. " overhead you and Henretta. Se has a fire in her that I like... It seems she's good at sparking fire in other people as well." WORDS ● TAGGED ● NOTES

He set the baskets inside of the boat before turning to face her, the pain in his eyes visible, "I-I have to do this, and I have to do it alone." He hesitated a moment before he came closer, taking her hands with a tight smile, it was the best he could manage for optimism, but he didn't have much of that left in him, "I'll come back...Probably..." He swallowed a lump, and he couldn't help the smallest twinge of fear in his eyes that he'd only ever show with her, "and if I don't come back..." He pulled her into a tight hug, feeling his heart aching like a raw, open wound, "I'm glad I got to know you before I died." He let out a shaky sigh as he pulled away, chuckling softly at her words.
"She's something else alright, but I needed that fire...I can't believe I let mine die so easily." He cleared his throat, and set his eyes in a determined expression, "don't tell anyone where I've gone, give me a week, if I'm not back by then..." He trailed off, clearing his throat as he pulled away, "I love you, mom."

Valka nodded, hugging her son tightly, as if he'd slip away and die there if she let go, sighing shakily against his shoulder as she bowed her head against it. "Don't be afraid Hiccup. Like Henry said, Toothless will be there for you in spirit... And Berk supports you no matter what, even if you have to do this alone." She said softly, giving his hands a squeeze as he pulled away, "Promise me that when you come back, you're in one piece?" She offered the light joke, her smile slowly fading as her dragon came forward and nudged Hiccup affectionately. "Berk will wait for your return... I have full faith in you, son." [googlefont="Playfair Display"][googlefont="Josefin Sans"] This is the end Hold your breath and count to ten Feel the earth move and then, hear my heart burst again [attr="class","itokaytext"]He let out a soft breath that he didn't know he'd been holding, nodding with her words, he only hoped words and spirit would be enough to get him through this fight, he'd survived more than his fair share of trauma and close calls, and it was hard not to hope that this would be no different, but he was also fighting alone, with only his own strength's to rely on, there was no one to catch him if he fell this time. He couldn't help a soft laugh at her words, shaking his head, "I'll do my best." He patted Cloudjumper when he nudged him, "you take good care of everyone, okay?" He let out a heavy sigh as his own smile fell, and he nodded before turning to board the boat, untying it from the dock before he pushed off, feeling every bit like this would be the last time he saw Berk, as much as he wanted to believe otherwise, he was walking blind into a fight, with no way to know what to expect.
